An architecture drifted for months and nobody could even name the problem. Everest expeditions and wingsuit jumps turned out to be the way in.
The anecdote
An agent architecture had grown into something that couldn't be held in one head anymore. It kept losing coherence — drifting from its mission, doing things nobody asked for, slowly becoming useless. And the worst part: you couldn't even talk about the problem, because "it's drifting" produced only generic advice. The thing that was wrong had no name.
The way out came sideways. Stuck, the mind reached for seemingly-unrelated content — Everest expeditions, high-altitude reconnaissance flights, wingsuit jumps — not as procrastination, but because those scenarios felt like the problem: one human doing something on top of a ridiculous amount of invisible infrastructure. Stacking a few of those wildly different domains and asking "what structure do these share?" collapsed the whole mess into four slots: something that steers, something that carries, something that keeps it aligned, and the defined ways the pieces talk.
Applied back to the architecture, the diagnosis was instant. There was a steerer. There was a vehicle. There were feedback loops. There was nothing keeping it aligned — nothing periodically asking "is this activity still serving the goal?" That's why drift was inevitable. The empty slot was the bug. And the fix turned out to be embarrassingly small: a short, honest, periodic check. Not a yes/no rubber stamp — a forced statement of the goal is X, current activity is Y, Y serves X because Z. If you can't say Z, you just caught the drift.

What it reveals (the shape of the deeper rung)
- The unlabeled problem becomes solvable the moment it has a vocabulary — and you can forge that vocabulary from your own pre-conscious reaching plus cross-domain triangulation, rather than waiting for someone to name it for you.
- The diagnosis is finite, not infinite. "Everything feels broken" becomes four answerable questions, and the slot you can't answer cleanly is the failure. Almost always it's the alignment slot.
