Forge Your Own Vocabulary

You can't discuss what you can't name. Your mind reaches across domains before it speaks — and the shared structure between those reaches is the name you were missing.

The shape

You can't discuss what you can't name, and you can't name what hasn't been collapsed into words yet. A lot of the hardest problems aren't hard because they're complicated — they're hard because the thing that's actually wrong has no name yet, so every attempt to talk about it (to a colleague, to an AI) returns generic advice.

And once you name the shape, the name becomes reusable equipment — a two-minute lens you apply to any future instance, and a shared metalanguage that quietly reshapes how you and any collaborator (human or AI) process everything afterward.

Why it matters

The default move when stuck is to push harder in the same vocabulary, or to go shopping for someone else's framework. Both fail for genuinely novel problems, because the right framework doesn't exist yet — nobody has named your specific failure pattern. Waiting for someone to name your problem for you worked when change was slow. It doesn't anymore.

This reframes two things at once. First, the "distraction" you feel guilty about is often your best pattern-recognition engine running; killing it cuts off insight at the source. Second, you don't need to find the right framework — you can forge it, from your own pattern-matching, using an AI as the thing that collapses the stack into a name. The payoff is asymmetric: one forging produces a tool you reuse forever.

How to think with it

  1. When you're stuck and reaching, get curious instead of guilty: what specifically am I drawn to, and what do these things have in common? The catharsis is real — but the selection is signal.
  2. Collect several analogies from genuinely different fields that feel like your problem. Resist picking examples from your own domain; that's the move that returns nothing new.
  3. Triangulate: "what structure do these share?" The answer is the universal you couldn't name.
  4. Validate by click, not proof — when the unlabeled thing suddenly has a name and you recognize it, that's the signal. If it doesn't click, your stack was too narrow; add more domain-variance.
  5. Then name and keep it. The named shape is equipment now. You wear it; you don't re-derive it.
